New Olympic Sport

I had to attend a meeting in London yesterday (technical committee of the Maltsters Association of Great Britain – and you were wondering why I’m called barley geek boy!) so flew down and back in the same day.

While getting off the plane at Gatwick I was reminded about a comedian (cannot remember who) speaking about a new sport we should have in the 2012 Olympics – the Getting Ready to Leave a Plane Sprint!

This involves seeing who can be ready to leave an aeroplane the quickest ie getting out of your seat, getting your bags out of the overhead locker, getting your coat on and then standing in the aisle! First one ready is the winner.

You have to be careful however, taking your belt off before the seatbelt sign goes out means instant disqualification. And this is where so many people fail!

I had to really control myself, I wanted so much to laugh, as all I could hear as the plane nearly came to a halt was click, click, click – I wanted to shout you are disqualified!

And getting back into Inverness was the same – click, click, click! Man it was funny.

Next time you are on a plane sit back and see who wins the Getting Ready to Leave a Plane Sprint, but watch out for those who have a false start!

  1. Of course not forgetting the companion sport of “Renewing Mobile Phone Contact – Sprint”.
My recent journies this year have had many amusing moments as the travellers, deprived of being contactable [ and affirmed as important to someone ] race to switch on the mobile [ cell ] phone to resume the Oh so important conversations, messages and texts which were Oh so unneccessary just 10 years ago.
On my San Diego – Houston flight, our companion talked and texted till immediately before take-off and was back on network before we got to the terminal. As did several dozen others.
Me – I waited till I was indoors.
    Other sports
    - Bluetooth Marathon – just how long can you stay in contact irrespective of need.
    - Block the Baggage Reclaim View – prevent anyone from having sight of and access to their luggage till you’ve got yours by standing as close to the conveyor as possible. Extra points for interlocking with other players.
    - Carry-On Weight Lifting – just how big a bag can you get away with?
    and my favourite…[not]….
    - Seat Recline Sprint – how soon into the flight will your seat back be in my face?

But I still love flying and meeting people. Don’t they make you larrrf!?
